Publisher's Corner Hello, everybody. I hope you had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. I certainly did. I went for a much-needed long weekend in the mountains and have just returned. I have been spending the past month or so adjusting to life with a very active 4-year-old in my house. This grandmother isn't used to all the activity, and it's been taking up a lot of my time and energy when I'm not at work. I'm not complaining, though. Having my daughter and granddaughter in Georgia is five years' worth of dreams come true -- not to mention some great photo opportunities that are now presented to me on a regular basis. There's something to be said for having more than once or twice a year to get pictures, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Member Birthdays Nicolette Dunn celebrates her birthday on September 9. Be sure to wish her a very happy birthday! Birthday Date Information In an effort to update our member list, I will be sending an e-mail out to members asking that they reply with their birth date. Of course, feel free to e-mail that information to me any time. You don't need to wait for my e-mail! September Meeting Our September meeting will be held on Thursday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Julian's Episcopal Church in Douglasville, Georgia. Come see what Sweetwater Camera Club is all about. September Contest: Macro Our contest theme for September is "macro." For the purposes of this contest, "macro" has been defined as "something VERY small in which the details are lost to the naked eye. Take a picture of those details! Itsy bitsy, teeny weenie." In the book "Learning to see Creatively" by Bryan Peterson, he defines macro photography as "to explore worlds that would otherwise pass unnoticed......Consider the world view from the prospective of an ant...." Macro photography is nothing more than extreme "close-up" photography. Not just a face, but the pores in the skin, not just a butterfly on a flower but the pollen on the butterfly, the grain in wood, the veins in a leaf, the velvet in a rose petal. It is the very fine detail that actually makes up your subject. It could be drops of dew on a blade of grass or as extreme as the microscopic elements in a drop of dew. Simply put, macro is very close up. August Contest Winners Below are our contest winners from August. These will be published in the Chapel Hill News and Views. Great job to all our winners. Congratulations! Website of the Month This month's website is a listing of many sites pertaining to legal issues for photographers, including a lot of copyright information. Clicking on all the links listed here should keep you busy for a while! http://photography.about.com/od/legalissues/Legal_Issues_for_Photographers.htm Tips and Tricks Should you be president? At Attitude Media, they believe the 2008 U.S presidential election should be decided based on the issues, not on personality, gender, or sound bites. So they constructed an objective survey to help you decide. Take the very quick 12-question survey and it will tell you which of the ten leading candidates best match your positions - and who is the worst match. You might be surprised. The fun part - they compare your responses to other voters on the site, and rate how you would do, as compared to the candidates, if you were running for president.
