Sweetwater Camera  Club

Publisher’s Corner

How exciting is this?  This is the first Sweetwater Camera Club newsletter to be published on the new SCC blog.  I know I’m very pleased to be a part of this history in the making.  Please bear with me as I get used to this new format.  Formatting and the like may be off a little bit until I get the hang of this!  The "look" may also change as I settle in to a format that I like for the newsletter.

We owe Jim Gardner and Richard and Norma Nichols a big "high five" for the work they have done to get this operational for us.

It’s the beginning of a new year.  We started this year with a business meeting in January.  Robbie wanted to get a feel for where the members would like to see the club go in 2007, and we discussed a lot of things.  I personally believe that 2007 is going to be a great year for Sweetwater Camera Club!

It’s Club Dues Time!

This is a friendly reminder that club dues need to be paid by March 2007.  If you have not already done so, please visit Jim Gardner at our next meeting and do so!

January Meeting Visitors and New Members

We were very pleased to have quite a few visitors with us for our January meeting. Some of our first-time visitors even became members!

New members who joined us in January are Minnie Dickerson of Villa Rica, Mary Lesh of Villa Rica, Larry Hunter of Douglasville, Stella Spyrou of Douglasville, Donna Johnson of Villa Rica, and Tony Bodnar of Winston.  Welcome to all our new members.

Steven Ottofy and John Frey of Douglasville were first-time visitors.  We hope to see you again, Steven and John!  We were also very pleased to have an original founding member of the club, Gloria Crider, visit with us for our January meeting.  Welcome back, Gloria!  We hope to see more of you this year!

 Website Additions

Jim Gardner sent an e-mail out to the members shortly after our last meeting regarding our website becoming more interactive for club members.  I wanted to put this new information in the newsletter as well.

A calendar has been installed so that events can be put online by committee chairpersons.  The calendar feature will be a stand-alone feature until it is integrated with the blog.  A list of archived newsletters has been started.  We’re bringing the club into the technology age!

February Meeting Information

We will meet at St. Julian’s Episcopal Church in Douglasville at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 8.

Our photo contest topic for this meeting will be “children.” Bring your photos and enter the contest!   Photo contest guidelines are posted on this camera club website.  I am sure there will be some excellent images.

Jim Gardner and Richard Nichols will discuss the club website and some of the new features that are available, as well as some of the features that are possible in the near future.  Please be thinking about what features are important to you on our website. Your input will be appreciated at the meeting.

We will also have a speaker during this meeting.  Larry Nix, who owned a studio in Dallas, Georgia and recently retired, will do a presentation on lighting/metering and enhancing images in Photoshop.  Larry is a professional digital photographer who was involved in weddings, children, family, and some commercial photography.  Larry will also judge our contest on children.  We look forward to having Larry join us.

Member Profiles Are Returning!

At our January meeting, we determined that there is sufficient member interest to begin including member profiles in the newsletter again (a fact that pleases me – because I enjoyed the member profiles myself).  So, beginning with the February newsletter, the member profiles will return!   I believe I already have a member who has “volunteered” to be our kick-off profilee.  You know who you are, and I’ll be contacting you shortly!

Heads Up On the
Upcoming Contest Topics

Our contest chair, Lesa Wills, has put together a 2007 Monthly Competition Topics chart beginning with March 2007.  This chart should be available at our February meeting.  In this chart, she has listed the topic for the 2007 contests, as well as a short description of just what she is looking for in entries for each month.  To give you time to think about your entries for upcoming competitions, I am listing below the topic descriptions for the February and March 2007 contests.

February 2007 – Children.  This is pretty self-explanatory, and as the topic descriptions in the above-referenced chart begin with the March contest, I’ll leave this one as is!

March 2007 – Elderly People.  Get a picture of the people who have history written on their faces, outlined on their hands, and the weight of the world on their backs.  Your picture should tell a story with lots of depth and drama.

Birthday Celebrations

Members who are celebrating birthdays in February are listed below.  Happy Birthday one and all!  If I have missed somebody’s birthday, please drop me a note and let me know so they can be included next time.

Website of the Month

I stumbled on this website just the other day. It’s a blog format with do-it-yourself ideas for photographic accessories, such as backdrop stands, softboxes for hotshoe flashes, etc.  Definitely some helpful ideas for keeping costs down in our photographic endeavors!

Tips and Tricks

“Blur Frame in Photoshop”

Author:  Tyger

While there are various ways to create a blur frame, this particular tutorial will walk you through the easiest way to do it in Photoshop 7 (though the same steps will work in Photoshop 5-C2).

Step 1: Copy the layer of the original photo and place that layer as the top layer.

Step 2: Using the guides to outline the frame, use the square selection tool to select the outline of the frame.

Step 3: With the selection still active delete that selection

Step 4: With the selection still active, do a reverse selection by pressing ‘ctrl’ + ‘shift’ + ‘I’. This will highlight the frame border.

Step 5: Add a gaussion blur to your liking, and if you like, adjust the colour, saturation etc.

Step 6: With the selection still active do a reverse selection by pressing ‘ctrl’ + ‘shift’ + ‘I’.

Step 7: With the selection still active, create a stroke, go under ‘Edit’ > ‘Stroke’ (The example below uses a 5px width with white colour, but you can do what you like here).

Step 8: Adjust the original image which should be on the bottom layer accordingly, whether you want to move it, scale etc. and voila!

Hi Judy!

Just wanted to thank you so much for mentioning me and my workshops in this issue of the Sweetwater Camera Club newsletter. I love your new format!

The Aquarium workshop is unfortunately filled (with a waiting list of 14 people!), and the Callaway Gardens class with Mark Johnson is also filled with a shorter waiting list.

My “How to Create Dazzling Digital Slide Shows” class on March 3rd, however, does still have openings but is almost full. Perhaps you might want to replace a small write-up about this seminar with the one just posted. (Details about this class on my website.)

Many thanks again for all the publicity. I really appreciate it.

~Charles
