West Georgia Driving Tour February 28th
By Sweetwater Camera Club

Our field trip committee, chaired by Mary Lesh, has put together most of the monthly field trips for 2009 including a very interesting one that is coming up this weekend, Saturday, February 28th at 10 a.m. We will meet at the Villa Rica Gold Mine at the northeast corner of the Mirror Lake Golf Course at around 10 a.m. Saturday. Visitors are welcome to come on our field trips. This one is free of charge. We will have a photo contest that includes any pictures made during this field trip at our next SCC meeting on Thursday, March 12th.

You must be a member of the SCC with paid-up dues to enter the March contest. This is a reminder to current members, your membership fees for 2009 should be paid up by or during the March 12th meeting. The fee is $18/year per person or $30 per family.

We encourage you to get together with others to carpool so that you can share and learn from each other as you participate in this image-making odyssey and scavenger hunt.

The map we will be following is located at: http://alturl.com/4iv .

A.      The first venue is the Gold Mine Museum in Villa Rica.

B.      Then it’s on to the downtown area in Villa Rica for some street photography.

C.      After that, you can hang around the Historical Tavern if you like,

D.     Then on to the historic Powell House.

E.      You will eventually stop at a cemetery and

F.       Finally-- visit Centennial Park.

Here are Mary’s directions and the objects you might find during the scavenger hunt:

A.      Visit and capture photographs at the Gold Mine Museum. If you need directions to the Villa Rica Gold Museum, click on the map link http://alturl.com/4iv and ask for directions from your starting point.

Then turn left out of the parking lot onto Highway 61.

Turn left and follow to the end and turn left again: this takes you right into downtown Villa Rica on the North side of the tracks.

Turn left onto North and park in parking lot to the left across from the First United Methodist Church.

There are plenty of photo ops behind these stores or along Main Street. Take your time and when you are ready—

Turn left on Main and follow around to cross the Railroad Tracks.

Once you cross the tracks and cross the main road Hwy 78, turn right on Wilson. There is some parking in the back.

On Wilson on the left is a Historical Tavern (there is a sign in front of it.)

Continue on Wilson to Westview and turn left. On the left after the Funeral Home is The Powell House, another Historical home.

When you leave there turn left back onto Westview and left at the corner. This is S. Dogwood.

Turn right at S. Candler and follow until it dead ends in the Cemetery.

When you are done here you will turn left on Hillcrest (toward the back away from the highway) and follow that road around to Centennial Park in Villa Rica. This is the last point on the driving tour.

Make some nice pictures at each stop, and feel free to photograph anything else you find along the way.

As you are driving/walking look try to find some or all of these things.

  • Home of a non-human creature
  • A flag other than your native country's
  • Waterfall
  • A puddle
  • An abandoned building/ruin

If you are not able to meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, you may take the driving tour at a different time and if it rains or you have other plans for Saturday, you may make the trip on Friday or Sunday as well. It is important that you work with other photographers to gain the most from this experience. Anyone needing a ride is welcome to go with Norma and me Saturday morning. We can take an additional 5 photographers. We hope you can all come participate in this challenging and interesting project! There will be many more trips this year after this . . . both local and day trips this year.
