Hello, Sweetwater Camera Club members, visitors and friends . . . As a former U.S. Marine back during the Vietnam era (1969-71), I would like to wish you a Happy Veteran’s Day! This Thursday evening, November 11th at 7:00 p.m. the Sweetwater Camera Club will hold its monthly meeting at St. Julian’s Episcopal Church in the Parish Hall. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. This month our presentation will be given by a superb photographer-- Ledra Davis. She is planning her presentation around this month’s “Motion” photo contest. She has a beautiful website located at http://www.ledradavis.com . In addition to her own photography business, Ledra leads a number of nature workshops around the country during the year. You might want to check out Natural Connections Photo Workshops to get an idea of the types of instruction she participates in. She will be showing her work as well as critiquing and judging our Motion and Field Trip contests. Results of the North Georgia Camera Club Shootout: Guess what? Yesterday we discovered that 2 of our photographers had winning entries at the North Georgia Camera Club Shootout on October 23rd. We would like to thank the 28 members who showed up at Berry College to participate in the contest which was attended by well over 300 photographers representing 11 photo clubs. I am attaching the 2 winning entries out of the 50 pictures that we submitted for the contest. Congratulations to Jan Peterson and Jane Cupp for their winning photos. We will be showing all 50 of our entries at tomorrow’s meeting, and we will show all 50 of the winning photographs so that everyone can get a good look at what all of the winning entries were. We would like to remind everyone that the Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County will be holding the 2010 GALA & Auction on Saturday evening, December 4th from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Douglasville Downtown Conference Center. Click here for more details. Election News: Last month I announced that because no one expressed a desire to nominate anyone other than our current officers to handle SCC administration during 2011, we would hold a “faux election” in which the current secretary would cast one vote re-electing the current officers during our November meeting. Because our secretary Stella Spyrou (pronounced “spearoo”) is out of town this month, we will reserve that honor for her until December 9th. Our current officers include Angelo Muhammad, Vice President; Stella Spyrou, Secretary; Gene Spicer, Treasurer; and me, Richard Nichols, President. This Month’s Photo Contests: (2) Field Trips: Little 5 Points Halloween Parade, Blue Angels at Dobbins Air Force Base or Stone Mountain Highland Games You can find out more about the contest rules on the web at http://www.sweetwatercameraclub.org/contests . The rules state that you may enter two photos each in the color, monochrome and field trip categories. Dominique Chaponot is our new field trip chairperson. Please read closely as the field trip rules have changed in relationship to the contests and other parameters. These new rules are effective starting November 11th, 2010 and have been formulated and agreed upon by both our Field trip chairperson and our Contest chairperson. When we hold a field trip, anyone may participate whether they are a member of the Sweetwater Camera Club or not. This gives inquisitive people who might want to join the club an opportunity to meet some of our members outside our club meetings to gain more information about our club and events as well as to learn and exercise a variety of photographic skills. However, anyone wishing to also enter the monthly Field Trip portion of the photo contest MUST attend the field trip on the day and time that is specified unless it is an all day event such as September Saturdays. If the time is specified as 8:30 a.m. but you arrive at 2:30 p.m. after all other participants are no longer present, or you must come on a different day, you can still enjoy the venue but you are not qualified as an active part of the field trip and therefore are considered as a participant in a “photo opportunity”-- but not qualified to participate in the monthly field trip contest. The reason for this is that the Field Trip Committee wants the mission of the SCC field trips to encourage group participation and social interaction. Field trips are a way to meet other participants and engage in the photographic learning process while strengthening relationships – people are encouraged to cultivate “shooting buddies” and to work with a number of different photographers, not just go through the motions of attending an event or visiting a venue just to enter a contest. To be clear, there will be a number of “photographic opportunities” suggested each month that will be made available through our club. If you need to attend at a different time or on a different day, you are certainly encouraged to do so, but the “field trip” immediately becomes a “photo opportunity” in your case. It is no longer classified as a “field trip” and therefore does not qualify your photos as contest entries because that would defeat one of the most important purposes of holding the field trip. In addition, we will no longer be announcing official “car pools.” Thus far we have had only one or two people who show up for car pools—this delays those who do make the effort to offer rides from getting to the venues. So-- you are on your own. Feel free to call one or more members and carpool independently with them, but we will not be setting up official car pools unless we decide to rent a bus to go to Brazil. Dominique Chaponot would like to announce these upcoming field trips, so mark your calendars for dates and times: 1. Saturday, November 13th at 8:30 a.m.-- A visit to Diane and Jack Yancey’s Farm: This farm, located at 5030 Daniel Mill Road, Winston, GA 30187 includes an authentic log cabin, a large forest, a creek, beautiful trees and much more. Diane wants us to enjoy their working blacksmith shop. Jack will fire up the forge and give us a demonstration. You may see 32 pictures she has made of her property by going to a website that Norma and I have set up at DouglasPix.com: http://www.douglaspix.com/photo/index.php?folder=/DouglasCountyGeorgia/Yancey_Farm/ . Thanks to Diane and Jack for making their farm available. Diane says that the entrance to her farm is located at the next drive way on the left just after you see the 5020 marked mailbox.
